Drive-On-In, Inc. today announced its founding partners, brother-and-sister team Kipp and Jennifer Sherer, will hit the road again, this time to promote the relatively new holiday celebrated at drive-in movie theaters throughout the country. Hollingshead Day was started last year as a salute to the inventor of the drive-in movie theater. On June 6, 1933 in Camden, New Jersey, Richard Hollingshead opened the world's first drive-in theater. On the first weekend in June, drive-ins across the country will host a variety of special events and promotions in honor of Hollingshead Day.
To celebrate, Kipp and Jennifer will road trip to two well known drive-ins to participate in the festivities. In order to share the experience with those at home who cannot make it out to a drive-in, they will set up a live web cast at the drive-ins and relay it to their website, drive-ins.com.
"Hollingshead Day sounds like a fun trip!" writes Thomas Procyk from Orlando, Florida. "I'll try to catch it on the web. [The last road trip] was a very cool experience from my desk."
The road trip will take the two through Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York. Starting Friday, June 1 in Northeast Ohio, a region with one of the highest concentrations of open drive-ins anywhere, the two will begin their journey.
On Friday evening, the duo will visit the Transit Drive-in in Lockport, New York. The Transit is a three screen drive-in with plans to add a fourth screen. They offer double features, miniature golf, and a movie star Wall of Fame.
On Saturday, June 2, the pair will head to Becky's Drive-In in Walnutport, Pennsylvania. Becky's was recently acknowledged by the New York Times as the #1 "must see" drive-in. With pony rides and community events, this drive-in is always a treat. Here, even the family dog is welcome.
After visiting Becky's, the two will make their way back to Ohio. Their complete itinerary is available on www.drive-ins.com and will be updated with commentary and photos from the road. Media contacts wishing to meet the duo, please call 702-392-0340 or e-mail email@example.com.
The duo has made several drive-in related road trips before. Past trips have included tours of America's historic two-lane highways. In May 2000, the duo traveled Route 66, one of the most well known highways in the world, visiting approximately 100 drive-in movie theaters. In October 2000, Kipp and Jennifer traveled parts of the Lincoln Highway, the first highway to connect New York with San Francisco. Most recently the pair traveled the east and west branches of the Dixie Highway. Starting in their home state in Ohio, they traveled to the tip of Florida and back.
"This trip is a special vacation for us," said Jennifer Sherer, CEO of Drive-On-In, Inc. "Most of our road trips require 12 hour days full of map reading, data sifting, and photo shoots. This trip is not about visiting as many drive-ins as we can; instead we'll be taking in an evening under the stars and reflecting on how the drive-in phenomenon got started."
Today, approximately 430 drive-ins operate throughout the United States (549 world-wide), a far cry from the over 4000 open during the drive-in's hey day. Some believe that the drive-in movie theater has been experiencing a revival in recent years. With approximately 50 reopenings and 20 new drive-ins being built from scratch in the last decade, it would seem as though many people are rediscovering the simple pleasures that the drive-in has to offer. Drive-ins provide a 'wear-what-you-want, bring the kids and even the family dog' type of atmosphere; one where everyone can have an affordable night out, under the stars.
Drive-ins.com is a comprehensive and continuously updated website dedicated to drive-in movie theaters and their history. The site features an online database of approximately 4000 drive-ins that can even be searched by zip code. The archives contain roughly 2500 drive-in photos and media references. Additional features include industry resources, show times, an events calendar, an online store, and the Ozoner Rewards program. For more information please visit www.drive-ins.com.
